Why Retiring in Placencia, Belize was the Best Decision We Made:

It took just one visit followed by lots of research for us to decide on Placencia, Belize as our retirement home. We visited many 55+ communities in the US but felt we just weren’t there yet (we don’t act our age:) we wanted more adventure and a cost of living that would allow us to travel. Known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant community, and affordable living, this small village on Belize’s southern coast has been attracting retirees like us, from all over the world. Here are some compelling reasons why retiring in Placencia could be the best decision you make:

1. Idyllic Caribbean Beaches

Placencia is a peninsula that offers 16 miles of sandy beaches along the Caribbean Sea. The crystal-clear waters and warm tropical climate make it a paradise for beach lovers. Whether you enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or simply walking along the shore, the peaceful environment is perfect for a laid-back retirement lifestyle. Our home is in Maya Beach which boasts some of the best beaches in Belize. You’ll get a first-hand beach experience if you’re able to take a test run at Bella Sway

2. Affordable Cost of Living

One of the biggest attractions of Belize, particularly Placencia, is the affordable cost of living. You can live comfortably on a fraction of what you might need in the U.S. or Europe. Groceries, housing, and healthcare are more affordable, and with no capital gains tax and a favorable exchange rate for U.S. dollars, your retirement savings will go further.

3. Expat-Friendly Community

Placencia has a growing expatriate community, making it easy for retirees to integrate into social circles and find new friends. The locals are welcoming and speak English, the official language, which removes any language barriers. There are also expat-run clubs, events, and social gatherings, making it easy to connect with others and feel at home. We are members of many Facebook groups that really help navigate this new chapter in our lives.

4. Outdoor Adventure & Natural Beauty

If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, Placencia offers endless activities. You can enjoy world-class snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing along the Belize Barrier Reef, which is just a short boat ride away. Inland, you can explore lush jungles, go hiking, or visit ancient Mayan ruins. There’s always something to do for nature lovers. John scuba dives and has loved his Belize dives. Although I’m an ocean-loving-mermaid, I have yet to scuba dive, but I am looking forward to getting licensed in Placencia, which beats learning in a pool, right?

5. Mild, Tropical Climate

Belize has a tropical climate, which means warm temperatures year-round. Placencia’s weather stays mild, with ocean breezes making it comfortable even during the warmer months. You won’t have to deal with cold winters or extreme heat, making it an ideal spot for retirees looking to enjoy a consistent, warm climate.

6. Healthcare Access

Placencia offers access to quality healthcare at affordable rates. While Placencia itself has smaller clinics, for more advanced care, retirees often travel to nearby Dangriga or even Belize City, where they can find modern facilities and well-trained medical professionals. Many retirees also combine local care with trips back to their home country for specialized treatments, thanks to the ease of travel.

7. Ease of Residency

Belize offers one of the most retiree-friendly residency programs in the world: the Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program. This program allows you to enjoy a number of tax exemptions and an easy path to permanent residency as long as you meet the basic requirements, such as being over 45 years old and having a monthly income or pension of at least $2,000.

8. Real Estate Opportunities

Placencia’s real estate market is diverse and offers a range of options, from beachfront homes to more modest inland properties. Many retirees choose to buy property as the prices are relatively affordable compared to other Caribbean destinations. Whether you’re looking for a luxury villa or a cozy bungalow, Placencia has options that can fit various budgets. We were lucky post Covid to find Bella Sway right on the beach. Although there are limited beach properties, people sell homes for different reasons. As long as you keep your finger on the pulse a beach property or your perfect property will hit the market someday. Many retirees decide to rent as it is very affordable.

9. Cultural Richness and Local Festivals

Belize is known for its cultural diversity, and Placencia is no exception. The mix of Garifuna, Creole, Mayan, and other ethnic groups makes for a rich cultural experience. There are numerous local festivals, including the popular Placencia Lobsterfest, which celebrates local cuisine and music. Placencia is home to many artists. As an artist myself, I was very drawn to this aspect of the community. Every February there is the Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival and it grows every year. The Placencia Restaurant Week is a new event created to celebrate the amazing culinary scene. There are also many festivals in surrounding towns like The Mango Festival in Hopkins and the Chocolate Festival in Punta Gorda. As a retiree, you can enjoy immersing yourself in this vibrant, colorful culture.

10. Low Taxes

Belize offers some significant tax advantages to retirees. There is no capital gains tax, and property taxes are very low compared to most other countries. This is a huge benefit for those looking to stretch their retirement income. Additionally, as a QRP participant, you can import personal goods tax-free, making the transition even more cost-effective.

11. Safety and Tranquility

Placencia is known for being a safe, tranquil village. Crime rates are relatively low, especially when compared to larger cities. Most residents feel secure, and the friendly, close-knit community makes it easy to settle in and enjoy a peaceful retirement.

12. Close Proximity to the U.S.

One of the biggest concerns for retirees moving abroad is staying connected to friends and family. Placencia’s location makes this easy, as there are direct flights from Belize City to major U.S. hubs like Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and Miami. Whether you need to visit family or they want to visit you in paradise, travel is simple and convenient.

13. Slow-Paced, Relaxed Lifestyle

The slow-paced lifestyle in Placencia is perfect for those looking to leave the hustle and bustle of city life behind. There’s no rush, no traffic jams, and no stress. Life is all about enjoying the little things—sipping a coconut on the beach, catching a sunset, or chatting with neighbors. It’s an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy your golden years.
